Opera Mississippi Honors Two Revolutionary Voices in American Jazz in 'Centennial Giants' on October 26

The October 26th production will be the second performance in Opera Mississippi's 81st season, "Season of the Heart."
Davis and Coltrane first crossed paths in the legendary Miles Davis Quintet, where Davis’s cool, understated trumpet sound met Coltrane’s searching, fiery saxophone. Together, they helped create some of the most influential recordings in jazz history, including music associated with the landmark album Kind of Blue. Though their artistic paths eventually diverged, both continued to challenge convention and redefine what jazz could become.
Born in Illinois, Miles Davis stood at the forefront of nearly every major jazz movement from the 1940s through the 1990s. From "Birth of the Cool" to "Bitches Brew," Davis continually reinvented his sound, incorporating rock, funk, classical influences, and emerging musical styles. His ensembles also became launching points for many of the greatest musicians in jazz history.
Born in North Carolina, John Coltrane emerged as a visionary saxophonist whose work transformed modern jazz. His groundbreaking contributions to hard bop, modal jazz, and free jazz brought extraordinary technical command, emotional urgency, and spiritual depth to the genre. Albums such as "Giant Steps" and "A Love Supreme" remain defining works of American music.
As the world marks the 100th anniversary of their births, "Centennial Giants: Coltrane and Davis" is an event that celebrates these two innovators whose music continues to inspire, challenge, and move audiences.
The performance will take place Monday, October 26, 2026, at Duling Hall (622 Duling Ave., Jackson, MS). Doors and Opera Happy Hour begin at 6:00 p.m., and the performance begins at 7:00 p.m. General admission seating is $40.
The Larry Panella Quintet consists of Larry Panella (saxophone,) Ashlin Parker (trumpet,) Sam Bruton (piano,) David Pellow (bass,) and Nathan Sanders (percussion.)
